Sadly, the abundant chances to plan ahead have passed. Now it's just a question of how much damage we absorb before we overthrow our fossil fuel overlords and say enough!

One thing I've been thinking about is that climate change isn't just changing the weather, it's changing the margin of safety around which our societies were built. Infrastructure, agriculture, insurance, public health, all of them quietly assumed a more stable climate. We often talk about rising temperatures, but the deeper story is that we're redesigning civilisation under conditions it was never built for. That's the part I think we still underestimate.
