You probably read the story in the NY Review of Books about Venezuela, and what brought it down: a combination of corruption and oil. If a country has oil, it's easy prey to corruption, and even without corruption, it's a curse. It brings in so much money that it's almost impossible for the country to foster real economic development.
Thanks Bill for, as always, an informative and inspiring column. Here on the west coast of Canada, work has been ongoing on converting the Beaver seaplane to electric:
I look forward to all your posts in my inbox; this event, seen last night on the news, truly CHILLED me. Thank you for sharing your info, your thoughts, and your inspiration, Bill.
I don't think of the BBB as legislation. It was not crafted by legislators, deliberated, vetted and hammered out. I think the House and Senate believe they are still legislating but that is not true. They are doing the kings bidding.
Yes, a wonderful post. Thank you, Bill, for connecting the dots and following the money. I was surprised by the links between fossil fuel interests and anti-trans activists, but then the fossil fuel industry has also aligned with the anti abortion movement as well. Last but not least, the news about the electric airplane felt like a real glimpse of the future. It buoyed my spirits.
Hi Bill, the flight from East Hampton to JFK is actually about 100 miles, not 250. The plane can fly that distance though. $8 for 100 miles and 4 passengers is still amazing.
It's important to note that just as the far Right's focus on anti-LGBTQ+ is likely also a tactic to distract people from fossil fuel's impacts on climate change, I argue so is the focus on reforestation a tactic to distract people from one of the most important and least expensive things we can be doing to fight climate change, which is the preservation of the remaining old and mature forests, especially in the Green Mountain National Forest here in VT. We know that young seedlings, if they survive, will take up to 50-70 years before they have any significant capacity to absorb CO2, whereas the old and mature forests absorb the most CO2. One mature or old tree can absorb up to 100 times the amount of a young tree. A focus on reforestation, (planting saplings) without an equal focus on Pro forestation, (leaving the mature and old trees and forests alone), is a no win for our immediate critical need to sequester as much CO2 from our atmosphere as possible. Thank you for all your good work, Bill. I really appreciate your wisdom.
Love how you pull all the pieces together, as always, Bill! Just a tiny correction: Noem was the governor of South Dakota; it's that wonderful defender of public lands Doug Burgum who was the governor of North Dakota.
Hey Bill, in defense of ND, Noem was the Governor of SD.

I will think of all of you as I stand in my town with my sign! Indivisable !

Yes, book me on an electric flight!
So much resistance to doing anything other than that which is found in the “familiar museum.”
So the LGBtQiA community has a sworn enemy! Fossil fuel companies!!!
Thanks 🙏 for the likes, I'm more laconic, not as eloquent as 💵 Bill Mckibben 2B sure 😺😊.
