If I have a skill, it’s writing. But I’ve heard that people are doing podcasts now—indeed, my wife, my daughter, and my son-in-law are all podcast experts. Feeling left out, I was very pleased when the peerless Ayana Johnson asked me if I might cohost Season 5 of her What If We Get It Right? podcast, which is dedicated to environmental issues in the midterm elections — what’s at stake and how the planet can win. Not only does she know how to do podcasts, she knows how to make images on the computer, hence this:
We’ll be covering everything from the AI data center boom to Super PACs for clean energy, climate hushing, protecting our public lands, and how to get environmentalists to actually vote. (According to the Environmental Voter Project, 11.2 voters for whom the environment is the number one issue didn’t actually manage to cast a ballot last time, which has resulted in…some problems).
Anyway, you can find What If We Get It Right? wherever you get your podcasts. So you don’t miss an episode, follow the show on your fave platform
More to the point, today we’re doing a live version of the thing to kick it off, with one of my oldest friends and favorite people, Naomi Klein, who is I think the smartest progressive intellectual at work in the English language. (My familiarity with the other languages is, sadly, minimal). Anyway:
Substack Live TODAY (Aug 31st) @ 3pm ET: Fascism v. The Planet, with Naomi Klein.
We’ll be talking with Naomi about many things, but certainly among them data centers, how fascism is intertwined with environmental policy, and her new book End Times Fascism and the Fight for the Living World, co-written with Astra Taylor.
To join, just hop onto any of our Substack pages at the correct time and you’ll find us. If you miss the live conversation, fear not, we’ll be releasing it in our podcast feed too. I’ll be the stumbling, halting voice in the corner, and I thank you in advance for not snickering too much as I learn the craft.

My faves, together at last! Ayana is my hero.
How/where do I watch it on Substack?
