Hooo, boy. This double whammy is a hard one. Such colossal hearts and minds we won’t soon see again. But who knows? Maybe we just need to turn over more rocks to see who might be living underneath.

Wonderful reporting bill. I loved so Wilson especially his autobiography and joy by the dalai llama and Desmond Tutu. So hard to lose them both.

Amen to that. Dear precious souls. I have Wilson’s book Anthill at my bedside table. 🙏🏼

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. I had not thought of these two great men together like this. And truly their love and respect for all life is what my made them great teachers

Marvelous piece to share with family and friends and widely now - our divergent views brought together just as we must around the globe.

Admired both men but hadn’t appreciated the powerful connection until you brought them together. Thanks for compellingly observing Stephen Spender’s counsel to “think continually of those who were truly great.”

Nicely said. Your last line is the marching order they left us with: leave behind a planet far the better for our presence. Also, I guess, make your third act last until the end.

So glad I didn't just delete this when I couldn't read it right away. Bill, so beautiful and eloquent, thank you!

Thank you, Bill, for this stunning essay. I met Desmond Tutu twice, and I treasure the memory. His death means that his unquenchable spirit is with us all, wherever we are. Just as you envision Tutu and Wilson meeting on the other side, so do I envision their ongoing presence being with anyone on this side whose heart is open to it.

Thank you so much for this, Bill sensei.

The way you wrap such somber news up and give it context is beautiful. Indeed, we can all shake hands on the mountain if we try hard enough to get there.

Let's hope more and more are inspired to make the climb.

With love,

Patrick
