Good morning, Bill! Who chooses the locations of COPs, and why? Azerbaijan is obviousy unacceptable, with conflicting interests!

Thanks for the BBC link to "neglected clean heat". Wasting resources is a bad thing, so I hope that Vermont could be a leader in this effort.

Some part of the UN chooses them, on a rotation that goes between various regions of the world, and apparently Russia vetoed a bunch of other possibilities for next year. The good news is, 2025 will find the COP in Lula's Brazil--and I actually think that may turn out to be a truly important gathering

Interesting about Germany having so much solar electricity. Germany is further north than any point in the lower 48. It's basically at the same latitudes as Ontario, Canada. Its southernmost point is probably more than 100 miles north of the northernmost tip of Maine. (I'm looking at one of my globes.) Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and Maine could all be solarized.

You can thank my parents for this info, as they gave me my interest in geography by driving me across the country three times by the time I was a little over 8.

Hi Bill - Many thanks for this excellent piece. It deserves to be read widely--including by those making key decisions in the White House and DOE. Many ThirdActors will be happy to see your reference to plans afoot for supportive actions across the country. As you know better than anybody else, the Gulf LNG buildout is a national and international issue. I'll be interested to hear the organizers' suggestions for distributed actions that keep the focus firmly on the decisions being made in DC -- perhaps an outpouring messages to the Congressional committees that oversee DOE will be part of it.

I can't be at the protest outside of the DOE, however if a letter from a concerned world citizen in Canada would help, what is the best address to send one.

Got bail? That’s got to be one of the most succinct titles! Thanks for continuing to point the way.

I would like to know about protests on the west coast where I live. I don’t want to fly to a climate protest.

Bill, do you know if any organizations provide bail funds to those who get arrested? I won’t be there in person but I am able to throw some $$ in the kitty to help bail others out. Thank you for all that you do!!

Yes I would like to know as well. I’m on the opposite coast and can’t attend but would love to support.

Hi Bill, fabulous stuff as always. In my EcoForestry work, I often quote your exhortation: "Humans, stop burning stuff". "Bio Fuel" - burning trees made into pellets, is an order of magnitude worse than coal or gas, as you are killing a tree and stopping it from sequestering carbon, as well as burning it. One minor point for you: capturing heat from Domestic Hot Water (DHW) with a heat pump is irrelevant to sustainability, and not Eco Friendly. The best way to reduce emissions from heating is to insulate your house. If you are insulated to Passiv Haus, and heat your hot water by EV solar panels on your roof, then you are a net energy producer, and don't need to commission a $24,000 ground source heat pump to fiddle around with drain water heat recovery. Cheers.
