While I share the frustration of the youngest voters re the sure state of global warming, healthcare, income inequality, reproductive rights, etc, they consistently fail to turn out the vote in election after election. Even in 2020, one of the highest youth turnouts in modern history, only 50% of young people voted. Political priorities are determined by those who show up. We'll never do better than a craven Manchin in WV, but we could win the House and increase the Senate majority, if 90% of the youth vote actually votes. It's easy to witness the corruption of Manchin and Sinema, and give in to cynicism, but the point is to make both senators irrelevant. We cannot count on Democratic leadership to do so...we must vote in people who can both lead and message. On another note, I find it interesting that a sizable majority of the country lacks the maturity to comply with public health mandates for 18 months to combat a global pandemic. The pandemic will eventually burn down to endemic heights. But, how exactly will these immature beings adapt to a permanent new normal of climate change where there is no 'light at the end of the tunnel', where fire, floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes become weekly events?
useful points--but remember that most people did get vaccinated, wear masks, etc--just as polling makes clear that most people want government action on climate change. We're reaching the point, I fear, where our system doesn't reflect the wishes and hopes of people because it is so heavily weighted towards vested interest--and that in turns leads people to check out of the system. I agree that only makes it worse, and work hard to keep people engaged; but I also understand the growing cynicism.
And I will add that when it comes to activism, the young have the rest of us all beat to hell at the moment. Which is precisely why we're starting Third Act!
Q1: Will the Third Act eventually have a Chinese language version and chapter in Beijing? "China generates over half of the world’s coal-fired power and accounted for 27 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2019"
Q2: Would the Third Act consider supporting US tariffs on Chinese and other country's goods if they fail to meet their decarbonization goals?
Q3: What will be the governing structure of the Third Act ... a Board of Directors and who will appoint them?
Yes, I should have written 'sizable MINORITY' vs 'majority', but the minority is sufficiently large that it has prolonged and greatly exacerbated an already challenging pandemic. Florida has experienced almost 60k deaths vs Australia's 1,300 (with roughly similar populations). As to youth activism, I agree, but we need them all to step up (and we need Third Act, as well). The game is rigged, so we all have to get involved...there's no margin for error on the Democratic side. If anyone sits out, we all lose. It's unfair, but it's what we face.
Joe Manchin didn’t give us Line 3. Joe Biden did. And I’ll never forgive him for that.
Is there suppose to be a link to Juan Parras and his family’s work?
