One thing that may be worth pointing out about big oil's profits and the idea that now is the time to make new investments: there are a handful of tax law provisions scattered across the Internal Revenue Code that essentially let the oil and gas industry get "full expensing" unlike any other industry. So, if there were ever a year to drop a lot of money into new investments, their tax planners are probably telling them this is the one.
