No doubt you saw that right after you said Biden should invoke the Defense Production Act to crank out heat pumps, Manchin said he should use it to fast track the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The people fighting MVP are doing a great job but this new battle between LNG or renewables for Europe has me thinking that the MVP fight may need to become a more national focal point within the climate movement. Your piece today indicates that Biden is favoring Manchin and more LNG. Maybe MVP needs to become this year’s KXL, DAPL and Line3 with the fight being taken to Biden’s White House in DC and ThirdAct, Sunrise Movement, 350, etc etc helping out the locals in VA & WV in a big way.

The Paradise fire destroyed a Catholic church, that baptized three or four generations of Rodriguez's, my relatives. Closer to home, the Sumner Grade Fire in September 2020 forced my family out of our home for about week, as I live near the evacuation zone, and last year, stripped Mount Rainier of most of her glaciers. Climate change is already here.

I hope that the Biden administration eventually comes out in favor of Heat Pumps for Peace and Freedom—it's such a clear-headed, honest idea for how to fix the problem.

Since heat pumps and deep energy retrofits go together like peanut butter and jelly, I wonder: do you have a sense of whether MEETS (the metered energy efficiency transaction structure) is on the White House's radar? Here in Seattle, retrofits that happen due to MEETS achieve 30% average energy savings in the building, all paid for with private capital, all possible just because the Seattle City Council fixed building owner and local utility incentives to not overvalue new power plants over efficiency improvements. It seems bizarre to me that a new LNG terminal was proposed as the solution to Europe's problems before anyone tried tweaking some utility regulations and then watching clever engineers do their thing, given that the latter is essentially free.

Let's organize a March on Washington in April or May. Spring is lovely in D.C.

Kudos to Bill McKibben for a rational, well-written overview of our climate predicament and how to fix it. Were we to treat our world with tenderness, intelligence, and inclusive community (people, animals, life) we could enter a future far lovelier and more abundant than we now can imagine.

Old hippie what a tired trope! Don’t really know what it means anymore and not sure I did in the 1960’s. Ex hippie woo bad.
